Local Lottery Ticket Scams

In Fair Oaks, VA, there have been at least three victims who have lost thousands of dollars in a fake lottery ticket scam. The suspect with a thick accent approaches victims in parking lots or grocery stores saying that he has won the lottery, but cannot claim the money because he is not a U.S. Citizen.

Then the suspect lures victims into paying an upfront cash security deposit in order to get the winnings. There have been three different victims so far that have been lured into this scam. One 45-year-old man gave $15,000 in cash to two men at a Fair Oaks gas station in early July. Police are investigating this case along with two others that may be linked.

Door-to-door Salesman Arrested for Sexual Assault

FRANCONIA, Va. (AP) -- Fairfax County police say they have arrested a door-to-door salesman from North Carolina after he allegedly sexually assaulted a teenage girl.

Police say 26-year-old Tommy Lee Harmon of Greensboro, N.C., was selling carpet cleaning products on Monday, when he knocked on the door of a home and met a 14-year-old girl, who was home alone. They say Harmon went inside and asked to use the bathroom.

After he left the bathroom, officials say he sexually assaulted the girl.

Police say neighbors told them about a group that had been selling items in the area. They later spotted a car matching residents' description and found Harmon, who is charged with taking indecent liberties with a minor.

Police say Harmon was with Pumppers Trust-Mrs. Clean Pump-it-Off Company, based in South Carolina.
