WFCM Holds Back-to-School Backpack Collection

Western Fairfax Christian Ministries (WFCM) is holding their annual backpack collection as we approach the new school year. They collect backpacks for the elementary, middle and high schools in areas such as Centreville, Fairfax Station, Clifton, and Chantilly to name a few.

WFCM is asking area residents to contribute whenever possible because so far they have requests for over 1,300 backpacks which are given to students with free or reduced-price lunches. Due to the rough economy, the numbers of backpack requests have gone up by 15% since last year. Some schools don’t even request a number, they just have asked for as many as possible.

If you would like to donate a backpack you can drop it off at WFCM located at 13981 Metrotech Drive in Chantilly, VA. WFCM asks that the backpack donations are dropped off on or before August 25 because the deliveries to the schools will occur by August 27.

Power Restored For Thousands Of Northern Virginia Residents

FAIRFAX STATION, Va. (WUSA) -- "I heard five big booms. It sounded like an explosion," said John Mason who lives near Fairfax County's new Crosspointe fire station where a dangerous mistake could have been deadly.

"We don't like that this happened, especially to us, but thankfully, nobody was seriously injured," said Dan Schmidt, a spokesperson for the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.

Ironically, the accident happened during a routine safety check at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday. Schmidt says a firefighter on the ladder truck was raising and moving the ladder when it hit the 230,000 volt transmission line above.
