Second Annual Springfield 15K / 5K Set for June 4

The 2nd annual running of the Springfield 15K / 5K race will be held the morning of Saturday, June 4 in conjunction with the Springfield Days Festival.

For more than 20 years, Springfield Days weekend has been an annual community celebration of all that Springfield has to offer. Now this weekend also means a highlight on the racing calendar for area runners.

Mark Russell, co-owner of Metro Run & Walk, a Platinum Sponsor, is returning as race director. He envisions a growing signature event, “We think this race should be on every runner’s calendar because it combines so many great aspects: a terrific course, a stadium track finish, substantial community involvement, and a great charitable cause. Last year’s inaugural race drew 500 runners and walkers and raised more than $8,000 for local recreation and fitness programs for underserved youth. We could push 1,000 runners this year.”

Tawny Hammond of the Springfield Days Committee thinks the fit with the weekend festival is perfect, “Imagine a thousand people winding their way through Springfield on a sunny morning in June with the breeze in their hair, smiles on their faces, and feelings of kinship with those around them. That is the spirit of community that Springfield Days was established to promote. And we are looking forward to many of the race participants remaining at Springfield Mall to enjoy many other Springfield Days activities.”

Kevin Shaw, President of the Kingstowne Striders running/walking club, is excited about taking on the race, “Once we formalized the Kingstowne Striders into a charitable organization with the goal of promoting running and walking in southern Fairfax County, the Striders became the natural home for the Springfield 15K / 5K. We are committed to making this race one of the very best events around.”

Springfield area businesses can help make this event a success through financial and in-kind sponsorships. Major sponsors include Balance Interactive, Safford Chrysler Jeep Dodge of Springfield, Positively Chiropractic, Alexandria Podiatry Associates, Capital Racing Company, LeMay & Company, Marriott, Rocket Communications, Trader Joe’s, and Springfield Veterans of Foreign Wars.
