Maureen Loftus, owner and executive director of LearningRx Reston and LearningRx Vienna, took home a top awards from LearningRx’s national convention held in Colorado Springs, Col: the 2017 Life Impact Award and the 2017 Community Impact Award. The Life Impact Award is given to LearningRx Reston for fulfilling the brain training needs of a client through multiple stages of life. BASIS Independent McLean Debuts New Mascot; Students Help Design Mascot Image

BASIS Independent McLean (BIM) debuted its new mascot as the Red-Tailed Hawk. Staff and students voted on five mascot candidates and the winning selection was the Red-Tailed Hawks. Two BIM students helped create the draft design for the Red-Tailed Hawks for their communication journal: Kelley Wang, an 11th grader representing upper school, and Grace Araya, a 4th grader representing the lower school. EOD Warriors Hold 2017 EOD Undefeated Long Distance Bicycle Ride to Benefit Bomb Disposal Techs

Cycling enthusiasts can choose a ride to raise money for the mission of helping EOD Warriors

On Saturday October 7, 2017 the annual EOD Undefeated Bike Ride will kick off at locations around the country, benefitting the EOD Warrior Foundation. The annual fundraiser will offer various ride distances, some spanning two days and over 150 miles, giving cyclists various rides to choose from, while supporting a great cause. Ride participants include wounded EOD warriors, active duty military Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians, veterans and civilians.  All funds raised from the event go to support the EOD Warrior Foundation’s mission to improve the quality of life for the EOD family by providing financial relief, scholarship opportunities, physical, social, and emotional support.

BASIS Independent McLean (BIM) started its second year with a new administrative team, including BIM’s Associate Head of School, Ron Kim, formerly of Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and Director of Student Affairs for Upper School, and Tiffany Conroy, coming from St. Anne’s School in Annapolis, Md. Maaza 29 to Raise Funds for Local PWC Schools Lunch Debt

Maaza 29 of Gainesville, Va. is joining forces with Help PWC (Prince William County) Kids Pay for Lunch program, by donating $1 for every dinner entrée served between July 1 and Aug. 31, 2017. The European-Ethiopian fusion bistro bar was inspired to support the program after learning of the desperate need to help Prince William County families avoid being turned over to collections for school lunch debt. BASIS Independent McLean 3rd Grader Places Second in  WETA-TV Kids Writer’s Contest

BASIS Independent McLean, third-grader, James Fishman won 2nd place in the 2017 WETA-TV Kids Writer’s Contest out of almost 400 entries for his illustrated story, Cats and Kitties, which is posted on www.weta.org. The WETA-TV Writer’s Contest was open to children in kindergarten through third grade who live in Washington, D.C., Maryland or Northern Virginia, with entries submitted by May 1, 2017.

A first, second and third place winner were announced at each grade level. First place winners will have their stories made into a hardcover book. Additionally, the area school that submitted the most entries received a free classroom library of books and a visit from a PBS Kids costume character.
