BASIS Independent McLean Earns First Place at  34th Annual Northern Virginia Regional MATHCOUNTS Com

For the first time in almost 30 years, the 34th Annual Northern Virginia Regional MATHCOUNTS Competition awarded first place to a new math champion: BASIS Independent McLean (BIM) of McLean, Va., which opened in 2016. BIM’s middle school math team placed first among schools in the Northern Virginia Chapter MATHCOUNTS Competition (comprised of 17 schools). Longfellow Middle School of Falls Church, Va., who has historically earned the first place award since the 1980s, came in second place. Vienna Student Learns Hands-On Teaching at BASIS Independent;Tysons Chamber Job Shadow Program

Angie Soler, a senior at James Madison High School of Vienna, Va., got hands-on teaching skills when job shadowing BASIS Independent McLean’s kindergarten teacher, Danielle Sarver. Soler is part of the 5th Annual Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce (TRCC) job shadow program, which includes 50 11th and 12th grade students of Oakton, James Madison, Marshall Academy and George C. Marshall high schools in Fairfax County, Va. Maureen Loftus, executive director of LearningRx of Vienna, Va., and Reston, Va. is heading up the program as she is the chair of the TRCC’s Youth and Education Committee. BASIS Independent McLean Students Give Back to Fairfax County Animal Shelter

BASIS Independent McLean’s early childhood and primary students created and donating 20 hand-made animal beds, blankets, cat toys and dog treats to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. For more information on the school, go to http://mclean.basisindependent.com.

“At BASIS Independent McLean, we teach our students how we’re all part of a bigger community, which is exactly what our animal bed project conveyed to our youngest students,” said Sean Aiken, head of school, BASIS Independent McLean of McLean, Va. “Not only did our students love creating the beds, but they were equally enthusiastic to learn that their hard work would bring comfort to so many animals in need,” said Aiken.

The Dr. Yum Project Offers Casino Night to Help Kids Learn Healthy Eating

What do a casino night and healthy eating have in common? On March 3, 2017, the community is invited to take part in Casino Night, being sponsored by The Doctor Yum Project, with funds going to support the mission of teaching families to eat healthy. Casino Night will be held at The Old Silk Mill, located at 1707 Princess Anne Street in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The event is from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. and will feature a variety of fun activities for attendees.

“We are excited to be holding Casino Night,” says Dr. Nimali Fernando, a Fredericksburg, Virginia-based pediatrician who founded The Doctor Yum Project. “This is a great way for the people in the community to have a fun night out, and know that the funds will be put to good use helping to improve the health of our community.”

LearningRx Of Vienna/Reston, VA. Leads 5th Annual, Award-Winning Job Shadow Program

Maureen Loftus, executive director of LearningRx of Vienna, Va., and Reston, Va. is leading the fifth annual Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce (TRCC) job shadow program for 50 11th and 12th grade students of Oakton, James Madison and, Marshall Academy and George C. Marshall high schools in Fairfax County, Va. Students can shadow professionals in more than 30 industries for one day in January or February. The program received a Blue Ribbon Award for Workforce Development from Fairfax County Schools in 2014.
