3rd Annual Healing Heroes Ride Scheduled for October 1, 2016

Hundreds of motorcyclists will take to the country roads participating in the third annual “Healing Heroes Ride.” The 100-mile motorcycle ride through the scenic Piedmont and Shenandoah Valleys is a popular “high stakes” poker run, which raises money to support Boulder Crest Retreat for Military and Veteran Wellness in Bluemont, Virginia. This year’s ride takes place on October 1, 2016, with a rain date of October 2, 2016.

Carmello’s of Historic Manassas, Va. was just named Best of Virginia for Italian cuisine in the recent issue of Virginia Living Magazine. Carmello’s is owned by long-time Historic Manassas resident, Alice Pires. Go to www.carmellos.com.

Their seasonal menus serve a wide variety of American cuisine with Portuguese and Mediterranean influence. Carmello’s sources local ingredients, and uses fresh herbs from their backyard garden.

Maureen Loftus, executive director of LearningRx of Vienna and Reston, Va. hosted the 23rd Annual Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce Stars event with 42 students attending from 22 Fairfax County schools for their positive achievements and significant improvements. More than 150 attendees joined the event, including Dr. Steven Lockard, deputy superintendent of Fairfax County Schools. Each year, the Tysons Regional Chamber partners with area schools to celebrate and honor selected students who deserve recognition for positive potential or significant improvements. The Chamber Stars event celebrates the accomplishment of students who have persevered despite significant obstacles or personal struggles.

Smithsonian Debuts “CrossLines”: A Culture Lab” May 28 & May 29 in DC;Reopens Arts & Industries Bldg

The Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center will debut “CrossLines”: A Culture Lab on Intersectionality” at the historic Smithsonian Arts and Industries Building Saturday and Sunday, May 28 and May 29, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., in celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Featuring the works of more than 40 artists, scholars and performers, “CrossLines” will host an array of art installations, live performances and interactive maker spaces. This two-day event over the Memorial Day weekend marks the first time the Arts and Industries building has been open to the public since 2004. The building will host occasional pop-up exhibits and special programs for the public throughout the year. Beginning June 29, Arts and Industries will serve as the marketplace for the annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival.

BASIS Independent McLean is grateful for all its new teachers this Teacher Appreciation Month. Veteran Fairfax County math teacher of 40 years, Vern S. Williams, is joining BASIS Independent McLean faculty in Aug. 2016, teaching middle school students. Renowned by parents, students and colleagues for his mastery as a math teacher, most recently at H.W. Longfellow Middle School in Falls Church, Va.; Williams passion and dedication to engage, teach and challenge students in mathematical reasoning and problem-solving has earned him nationwide recognition in his field. Williams is just one of many exceptional teachers joining BASIS Independent McLean, including Lisa Bliss of McLean, Va.
