Senior Citizens Group Helps Hundreds of Military Veterans Through Donation

Senior Citizens Group Helps Hundreds of Military Veterans Through Donation

Two decades ago, a small group of Loudoun County senior citizens saw the need for a dedicated multi-purpose senior center to benefit the entire Loudoun community to encourage healthy aging of the county’s older population. The Friends of The Senior Center at Cascades (FSCC) was formed and they began by educating the County Board of Supervisors of their vision. Focusing on fundraising efforts and countless volunteer hours, the FSCC was able to give seniors a place to remain active and feel connected.

Now, with the retirement of the FSCC’s president Olga Ricciardi, the Board’s wish is that their remaining funds be donated to help military veterans and their families. The all-volunteer board voted unanimously to donate $150,000 to Boulder Crest Retreat for Military and Veteran Wellness, where the money will be used to help the country’s combat veterans heal and recover from the aftermath of war.

Upcoming Events Offer Way to Help Support Ultimate Bomb Squad Technicians

Approximately 7,000 personnel serve in the U.S. military who are considered to be the ultimate bomb squad.  These Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians were highlighted in the award winning Hollywood movie, The Hurt Locker and perform what is know today as the most dangerous occupation in the military.  Over the last 14 years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, the military EOD community has had 132 technicians killed in action and over 200 severely wounded leaving many of them exiting the service facing challenges for them and their families.  The EOD community is a very close knit family and spans across all four branches of service, the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force and both the active duty and veteran EOD family is supported by the nonprofit organization called the EOD Warrior Foundation.
