Park Authority Programs Explore The Night Skies

From Fairfax County Park Authority:

Put your eyes to the skies in the dark this spring.

Join local astronomers and search for planets, moons, star nurseries and clusters during Fairfax County Park Authority astronomy programs.

It starts this weekend on Saturday, March 5, 2011 when Cub Run RECenter, located at 4630 Stonecroft Blvd. in Chantilly, hosts Globe at Night, a free, family-friendly event that will teach you how to measure and report light pollution by looking at the constellation Orion.  Cub Run will host a second family astronomy program on April 1 with a focus on Saturn.  The cost per person for that program is $4.

Cub Run also will host a Science and Astronomy Camp for seven-to-ten-year-olds the week of April 18-22. For more information call 703-817-9407.

On March 12, Lake Accotink Park in Springfield offers an opportunity to learn about deep space objects and the impact of light pollution on earth. Astronomers from the Northern Virginia Astronomy Club and naturalists from the Park Authority will be on hand to guide the evening’s activities. The cost is $3, and attendance is limited. The Park is located at 7500 Accotink Park Road.  For more information call 703-569-0285.

That same Saturday evening brings the Night Sky Festival to Riverbend Park, which includes guided star gazing, telescope viewing and ancient stories about the constellations. The cost is $5 per person. Riverbend Park is located in Great Falls. For more information call them at 703-759-9018.

The Moon and the Stars will be the topics of an April 14 program at Cabell’s Mill in Ellanor C. Lawrence Park. Meet a naturalist around a warm campfire before heading into the meadow to identify constellations. The program fee is $5. The park is located at 5040 Walney Road in Chantilly, VA. For more information call 703-631-0013.
