100 Needy Students Receive School Supplies Shopping Spree

Early this morning 100 local students in need were given the opportunity to visit a local Target store to buy back-to-school supplies. The Salvation Army and Target teamed up to help these students purchase a variety of supplies for the upcoming school year.

The Salvation Army and Target are helping a total of 12,000 students nationwide with the Target School Spree. Each student that is selected by the Salvation Army gets an $80 Target Giftcard for school supplies.

There were 30 students from DC and Prince Georges County, 30 from Alexandria and Arlington County, 30 from Fairfax and Prince William County, and 10 from Montgomery County.

Science Program for Kids Makes Science Look Like Magic

The Maryland Science Center is Hosting “Brain Benders” this Thursday, August 12, at 7:00 p.m. at Kings Park Library in Burke, VA. This program is open to kids ages 6-12. It is an opportunity to come see everyday objects through scientific eyes and is a program aligned with school curriculums. The Kings Park Library is located at 9000 Burke Lake Road.

Green Thumb Events in Burke this Weekend

The Burke Farmer’s Market will be held this upcoming Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at 5671 Roberts Parkway in Burke, VA. This farmer’s market is running through November 20. Some local vendors include Blue Ridge Dairy, Cibola Farms, Red Rake Farm, Susie’s Cookies and Westmoreland Produce.

The Master Gardener Plant Clinic will be on site at the market to answer any of your questions about plants that you may be growing. If you are looking for more tips for your landscape you can go to the Neighborhood Plant Clinic this upcoming Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Kings Park Library, 9000 Burke Lake Road. The Fairfax County Master Gardeners Association will be giving lots of great planting and landscaping strategies out to attendees.

Smart Markets to Continue Through October 29

Smart Markets Inc., founded in early 2008 by Jean Janssen, is the newest group of farmer’s markets to the Northern Virginia area. Janssen herself has been a resident of Northern Virginia for 25 years. These markets serve Centreville, Fairfax Corner, Gainesville, Herndon, Oakton and Reston and provide guaranteed producer-only farmers’ markets.

Want to Adopt a Mistreated Cat or Dog This Weekend?

Volunteers from the Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation are working to help find new homes for mistreated animals in different locations from Falls Church to Leesburg.

The founder of Log Dog and Cat Rescue, Pam McAlwee, has placed over 15,000 animals with new families since the launch of the organization in 2001. These non-profit group travels by van and continues to host up to 5 pet adoptions every Friday and Saturday morning.

Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation has a staff of 8 full-time employees and relies on another 300 people in volunteer positions who help out at the weekend events by walking, feeding, and taking care of the rescued animals.

Come this weekend, Saturday, August 7th, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. to the PETSMART in Seven Corners of Falls Church, VA for the dog and cat adoption. The address is 6100 Arlington Blvd.
