A Parent and Caregiver Forum on Teen Abuse of Prescription Medications

This story was sent to us by FCPS Outreach:

Do you know what’s in your medicine cabinet? Many teens do. Every day, on average, 2,500 teens abuse prescription drugs to get high for the first time. To educate parents and caregivers on the dangers of prescription drug abuse, Joseph Rannazzisi, a pharmacist, lawyer, Special Agent, and Deputy Assistant Administrator with the Drug Enforcement Administration, will present the current trends of prescription drug abuse affecting our nation’s youth.

The Forum will take place on Wednesday, September 29, 2010, at 7:30 p.m., at George Mason University’s Harris Theatre on the Fairfax campus. This Forum is a free event and no registration is needed.

Fairfax High School Seeks Volunteers

The PTSA is seeking volunteers for the "Rebels Reunite." Volunteers are need for Tuesday, August 31 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A perk for volunteers is that they can come in at 3:00 p.m. to turn in their own forms and get their schedules early with no lines!

Volunteers will help collect forms and give out schedules in the Fairfax High School Auditorium and Cafeteria. PTSA is hoping to get about 30-40 volunteers.

More volunteers are need for September 1-3 when students who could not make it to "Rebels Reunite" are coming to the Main Lobby to get their materials from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

If you are able to help out you can contact Clare Talbert, PTSA Volunteer Coordinator at: Talbert4fun@msn.com.

WFCM Holds Back-to-School Backpack Collection

Western Fairfax Christian Ministries (WFCM) is holding their annual backpack collection as we approach the new school year. They collect backpacks for the elementary, middle and high schools in areas such as Centreville, Fairfax Station, Clifton, and Chantilly to name a few.

WFCM is asking area residents to contribute whenever possible because so far they have requests for over 1,300 backpacks which are given to students with free or reduced-price lunches. Due to the rough economy, the numbers of backpack requests have gone up by 15% since last year. Some schools don’t even request a number, they just have asked for as many as possible.

If you would like to donate a backpack you can drop it off at WFCM located at 13981 Metrotech Drive in Chantilly, VA. WFCM asks that the backpack donations are dropped off on or before August 25 because the deliveries to the schools will occur by August 27.
