According to the National Golf Foundation, 29 million Americans play golf. That puts a lot of people outdoors for each game that they play, and if they want to get good at the game they are playing more than one round per year. What many of these golfers may not realize is the increased risk for skin cancer they have by being avid golfers. Skin cancer, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, is the most common form of cancer in the country, with 2 million people being diagnosed with it each year.

“Playing golf is great, but many don’t realize that it’s typically played in the sun,” explains Elise Champe, owner of Eclipse Sun Products. “All that sun exposure can really do some damage. It’s important to know the risks and what can be done to minimize them while enjoying the game.”

With the holidays approaching, eating and indulging is top-of-mind for most, but The Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) Studio in Alexandria, Va. has started its Training for Turkey adult fitness program now through Nov. 28, offering unlimited adult fitness classes for $50.  MSA will even host a special Thanksgiving Day MetroBarre and Yoga Class on Thurs., Nov. 28 to bring in the holiday. In honor of National Heart Month, Metropolitan Fine Arts Center (MFAC) of Alexandria and Fairfax Station, Va. is featuring their “Dance Your Heart Out” campaign, offering unlimited adult dance and mind/body classes throughout February for a special price of $110. And MFAC will donate 10 percent of all “Dance Your Heart Out class fees to the American Heart Association. Schedules can be viewed at www.metrofinearts.com. Classes are available at Alexandria and Fairfax Station, Va. locations.

MFAC’s “Dance Your Heart Out” campaign includes all adult dance, yoga and MetroBarre classes. A regular adult class fee is 10 classes for $130. The February “Dance Your Heart Out” program provides unlimited adult class access at a significantly discounted set fee of $110 with 10 percent donated to the American Heart Association.

Ashby Ponds resident Dick Rabkin worked as a patent attorney who helped bring the Rubik’s Cube to America
 

(ASHBURN, VIRGINIA) – Dick Rabkin spent over 15 years working as a patent and trademark attorney for Ideal Toy Company, which manufactured and distributed toys, dolls, and games beginning with the Teddy Bear in the early 1900s.  “I had toys and games all over my office,” said Rabkin.  The Ideal Company’s largest competitors were Hasbro and Mattel before the company was dissolved in 1985 a few years after being purchased by CBS.  Some notable toys produced by the Ideal Toy Company include Mr. Machine, Chrissy, Betsy Wetsy, the Magic 8-Ball, and the Rubik’s Cube.
